How to Play

Pomona Place Tag is a photo tag game where you find a mystery place within the city. You can get there by walking, biking, scootering or any other means (we encourage you to not use your car…the point is to get out and appreciate our city).

Here are the basics:

  1. Photos of interesting places in the city that also include your “Calling card” are what we call “placetags”.
  2. Calling cards could include the bike or scooter you used to get there, your backpack or handbag, a stuffed animal or other trinket that is unique. You are encouraged to use the same calling card every time you play.
  3. If you think you know where the placetag is, you must visit it and photograph your discovery. It’s not enough to just remember where it is, you need to get out and experience it.
  4. To complete a place tag round you must submit both a found image and a new mystery place image. Both images feature your calling card.
  5. Placetags are not selfies. Please don’t include yourself or other identifiable humans in your photos.
  6. The place where the most recent placetag was made is called the “Mystery Place.” In this example, and orange bike is serving as the calling card of the player who submitted the photo.

Once you arrive at the mystery place, you must create a matching placetag image of your own, using your calling card. In this example, the player’s calling card is a blue bicycle.

Next, it’s time to go to a new mystery place and make a new placetag that includes your calling card. Keep in mind good mystery places help keep the game interesting (Pro tip: As you discover good placetag locations, take an photo with your calling card, so you have a pool of placetags to draw from when it is time to use them). You also get to provide a written clue about the mystery place, for those players who may need a hint.

Great examples of mystery places include permanent objects of distintion like public art, buildings, landmarks or unique natural features.

Not-so-great examples of mystery places include temporary or movable elements like food trucks or farmers markets, or features that are common and nondescript or inaccessible. All placetags must be on public or publicly-accessible property. Trespassing is not allowed.

This is the boundary map of the game. All placetags must be located within the City of Pomona. Tags submitted outside the city will not be approved.
